At the Dentist’s Surgery

Dr. Astrid Schumacher; Reinbek

Dentistry (or dental medicine) is a branch of medicine specialized in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases of the oral cavity including teeth, oral mucosa and gums, jawbone. Most dentists work in a dentist’s surgery.

The dentist’s surgery and the dental team

A dentist’s surgery (or dental surgery, in the USA called dentist’s office) is a facility, where patients go to see a dentist.

Usually the staff of a dentist’s surgery consists of one or more dentists, dental assistants and – sometimes – dental hygienists.

In a dentist’s surgery usually you find:

  • A reception, where the patient can make an appointment to see the dentist.

  • A waiting room, where patients sit while waiting for their turn to be seen by the dentist.

  • Treatment rooms, where patients can discuss their health problem with the dentist, are physically examined and treated by the dentist and supported by dental assistants.

  • A room for special diagnostic methods (such as X-ray-diagnosis) with special equipment.

  • An office room, where much administrative work is done (such as settlement of dental services) and files are stored.
